When we finally decided to add a puppy to our family, we had one major obstacle to overcome. Our son had allergies to almost everything: cats, feathers, trees, grass, and shrubs of all kinds, dust, and dogs!
We talked to my son’s pediatrician. His recommendation: Get fish. No Thanks!!! Been there, done that!!!
It was at this time that my husband and I started doing a lot of research. Surely there was at least one breed of dog that would be OK for a family that had allergy problems…
After a lot of research, both from books and the internet, and also two different veterinarians’ consultations, we came up with three possible breeds of dogs: Bichon Frises, Poodles, and Terriers. (If you decide on Terriers, make sure that they are one of the breeds that require cutting of the hair (coat). This means that the dog has to be the type that does not shed.
So, when choosing a breed of dog for your family, when one of you have allergies, make sure to choose a dog breed that requires grooming (clipping their hair). Bichon Frises, Poodles, and some types of Terriers are great hypo allergenic dogs!
And, many years after we adopted our Bichon puppy, we have had the pleasure of a very sweet girl, who doesn’t cause our son to sneeze!
